History
“I love that History tells us where we’ve come from. It’s always interesting to learn about different civilizations and how they once were.” (Year 4)
“I love going on History trips. I really enjoyed our Butser farm trip as we got to smash chalk to make walls just like they did in Saxon times.” (Year 5)
Intent:
At TAB, we aim for a high quality history curriculum which should inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world around them. We believe that high-quality history lessons should excite children to want to know more about the past and to think about how historians investigate it. By linking learning through the theme of settlements, children have opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, make connections and to build an overview of British history, as well as that of the wider world.
Implementation:
Our principal aim is to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in history and we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our history lessons. Children will use our carefully constructed knowledge organisers to learn key vocabulary, facts, using them as both as a guide for their enquiries and a retrieval tool to help them remember their learning. With our history curriculum children will:
- have the opportunity to visit different places in the locality and beyond
- develop the skills of enquiry, investigation, analysis, evaluation and presentation
- ask historical questions and use talk to deepen their understanding
- gain and use historical vocabulary
- gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts
- understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequences and use them to make connections
Impact:
Through our purposeful and meaningful curriculum, with an investigative approach, all pupils will develop a deeper chronological understanding. Through historical enquiries we will give children the capacity to construct historical arguments and analyse sources. By the time a TAB Junior child leaves our school they will have encountered a variety of history topics, made links and compared them, whilst discovering how historians investigate the past.
We want to ensure that the children will know more, remember more and understand more about history and the lessons it can tech us for the future.
How are lessons organised? Where does planning come from?
Each unit of work has been carefully planned by the history leadership team to ensure our planning is purposeful, meaningful, personalised and adapted for the needs of the children at TAB Junior. All lessons follow the objectives set out in the National Curriculum using a wide range of history topics, linked through the theme of ‘settlements’. At TAB Junior we ensure that the children take part in a wide range of approaches to achieve their learning objectives and ensure that the information is memorable using activities such as drama, debates and discussions. During each topic, all children will experience an ‘Engage’ day where they will be immersed in the historical period they are learning about.
Equal opportunities and inclusion
At TAB, we are committed to promoting equal opportunities for all, regardless of socio-economic background, ethnicity, gender and disability in all areas of the curriculum. All lessons will have our TAB way values at the heart ensuring that all children are embracing challenge, being responsible, showing respect and contributing to show community spirit. All children will be given the tools to create a balanced argument and used their talk skills to respectfully argue and possibly disagree with others whilst providing evidence for their thoughts.
Enrichment Opportunities
Throughout their time at TAB Junior children will have a range of opportunities to immerse themselves in their topics through themed days, external visitors and trips.
Within our history curriculum there is plenty of opportunity for cross-curricular links with other subjects such as Art, DT, geography and Forest School.
